5 MINDSET SHIFTS TO SUPPORT AAC USERS

Today, we're diving into the top 5 mindset shifts crucial for supporting AAC users. Whether you're starting or aiding someone on this journey, I've got tips and relatable stories to share.

Mindset matters. How we approach new skills affects success, especially in learning language.

Before we jump into the top five: recall our last blog. A shift in communication beliefs takes time. Respect their pace while providing continuous support.

Now, for our top 5 mindset shifts:

  1. "I don’t know anything about AAC."

Shift to: "I know something and will start there."

If you're thinking about AAC, you know something! Start by listing what you know and then what you want to learn. Small steps lead to progress. For beginners, begin with what works on the device and explore more gradually.

  2. "I’ll wait to talk with AAC until I know more."

Shift to: "I will learn more by talking with AAC."

Implementation seems complex, but it's simple. When you face the fear of not finding words or knowing what to say you can be successful. Remember, if you speak it, try saying it on the device too. Practice improves efficiency.

  3. "No one on the team is on board with my AAC plan."

Shift to: "The team and I are ready to move forward."

It's not resistance but questions and concerns. Align goals and understand differing journeys. Flexibility matters. Start where the team is comfortable, show success, and reassess when needed.

  4. "I don’t have time to learn this."

Shift to: "I can learn one thing each day."

Learning AAC takes time, but it's okay to learn as you go. We’re not chasing perfection but knowledge. Take the pressure off and embrace learning daily.

  5. "We need to meet our goal."

Shift to: "We celebrate the steps to our goal."

Success isn't just the end result. Celebrate each step taken, recognizing individual timelines. Be the cheerleader, not just the scoreboard.

Remember, when things get tough, we choose to fear or embrace the challenge. Let's be brave together!

Apply these shifts daily in your AAC work. Your excitement really does impact those around you.
